A report describes 14 sentencing programs available to defense counsel in adult felony and misdemeanor courts in the U.S., some intended as alternatives to imprisonment. The programs described are: pretrial release and pretrial services; diversion; social service programs; forensic services; community service; "Earn-It" employment and restitution; the Vera Institute of Justice's community service project; defense-based presentence investigations; client-specific planning; community resource coordinators; trial assistance; victim-offender reconciliation; intensive supervision probation; and house arrest.
