In this essay, to illustrate both the challenge and the hope in forgiveness, Mary Sue Penn tells of a murder and its effects. In 1985 four young women participated in the murder of an old woman to get her money and her car. After arrest and conviction, one was sentenced to death. The grandson of the murdered woman, at first supportive of the sentence, eventually experienced a transformation in his fundamental perspective, from a desire for revenge to compassion and forgiveness. Penn traces this story through a summary of the events and the words of the grandson.
