The Juvenile Detention Initiative (JDAI) was founded by tne Annie E. Casey Foundation to determine if there are other possibilities for youth besides detention. JDAI establishes sites around the country that work to find alternatives for youth in the juvenile system through community programming. Such a site was established in St. Louis, Missouri in 2006. This thesis focuses on empirical data to determine if alternatives offered to St. Louis youth are effective in reducing recidivism and the number of days in detention. Policy implications are discussed.
