Oikoten, a non-profit organisation, has worked for many years with juvenile offenders. From 1987, Oikoten has been developing a juvenile mediation project. The aim of the project is to encourage juveniles who have committed an offence to take responsibility for the compensation of the damage they caused. The project underwent many changes and adjustments. This paper illustrates the evolution of the concept of the project as well as of its position in the judicial system. The paper describes the mediation practise and raises a number of juridicial and methodological questions that are encountered in the daily work of mediation.
