Canberra, Australia: Australian Institute of Criminology.The Karnet Training Project in Western Australia provides vocational qualifications and employment assistance for offenders nearing release. It is a joint initiative among government agencies (including the Ministry of Justice) and groups in private industry. This paper summarizes the background to the project, the nature of the project management and structure, and specific information on the partners and their roles. Additional information covers training in the prison context, selection of participants, and links to employment. At the end of the paper, qualitative outcomes of the training and future directions for it are discussed.
