This article contends that the imposition of a Western justice system has been a source of conflict in Liberia and has not strengthened the rule of law." In fact, imposition has been the enemy of the rule of law. However, recent efforts to consider the reasons and values behind the customary system, rather than merely focusing on regulating or eliminating it, have eased tensions and shown great potential for strengthening the rule of law in Liberia. This provides important lessons for future rule of law missions in other nations. (excerpt)
