Ellis observes that many criminologists have paid little attention to the relationship between religiosity and criminality, though on a popular level many people believe religion can reduce criminality. In fact, Ellis claims, a number of studies explore this relationship. Having reviewed more than 50 such studies, he presents key findings from them with respect to the relationship between religiosity and criminality. He also theorizes about a physiological explanation for the relationship between religiosity and criminality.
