Source: (1999) The Journal of Humanitarian Assistance (May). In recent years the concept of forgiveness has received increased attention in relation to socio-political conflict. In this vein, Hartwell asks basic questions about the role of forgiveness in reconstructing society after conflict. Is forgiveness possible? Is it necessary for reconciliation? How do former enemies find a way to live together? To answer these questions, she first defines forgiveness, then explores the possibility and relevance of forgiveness in a post-conflict situation. Her paper covers social reconciliation, justice, psychological models of interpersonal forgiveness, and other strategies for social healing.
