While community mediation services began in cities and towns in the United Kingdom, such services began to spread into rural areas in the 1990s. To illustrate, Bowers profiles a rural mediation service in Dorset: its origin; administration; management; services offered; funding; training; mediator accreditation; and case examples. She then compares the Dorset service with similar services in other parts of rural or small town UK, with particular reference to matters such as funding and types of cases handled.
