Based on her work as a drop out prevention coordinator in Colorado, Joan Fiene makes the following points. Educators and parents rightly focus on students' basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics (the three "R"s of education). At the same time, a focus on restorative justice in the school setting can help students whose education is thwarted or interrupted for behavioral reasons. She asserts, however, that incorporating the three "P"s of restorative justice (philosophy, principles, practices) into the three "R"s of education requires a philosophical shift in schools. She explains the nature of this shift and ways restorative justice can be applied in the school setting.
