De Ridder describes the continuing psychological needs of the people testifying before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa. Although the freeing experience of story telling is the first step on the road to healing, those who have experienced the traumatization of human rights abuses face repercussions for their testimony. These include the lowering of defenses and re-traumatization from the events. The Mental Health Response network was created in an attempt to serve these needs.
