The United Nations declared 2000 to be the International Year for a Culture of Peace, thus inaugurating an International Decade for Peace, with UNESCO as the focal UN agency for all related activities. In response to a request from UNESCO Australia, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Academy of Humanities organized their annual symposia on the question of peace. This particular collection grew out of papers from the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia symposium in November 2000, “Thinking peace, making peace.â€? The range of papers covers issues relating to international and national conflict and peacemaking from both theoretical and applied perspectives. Contributors include academicians, especially from Australia, and officials with UNESCO and the Aboriginal Reconciliation Council.
