According to Buggy, two models of probation currently compete for the hearts and minds of probation administrators and practitioners with respect to juvenile justice in the United States: the Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) model, which is older; and the more recent Broken Windows, or Community Justice, Model. Buggy sketches the history and key ideas of each approach to identify their commonalities and their differences.
