Here Katrien Lauwaert reports on the progress of a draft resolution which is moving through United Nations procedures. The draft resolution – initially prepared by an alliance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and sponsored at the UN by the government of Canada – deals with “basic principles on the use of restorative justice programmes in criminal matters.â€? According to Lauwaert, several founding members of the European Forum for Victim-Offender Mediation and Restorative Justice believe that the resolution would be a powerful tool for development of restorative justice practices. Lauwaert details where the resolution is in the UN process, and what remains to be done for the resolution to continue toward final form and potential adoption by the UN.
