London, UK: Sage Publications, pp. 264-269.This chapter discusses the response of the public toward criminal justice as reported in two British Crime Surveys and reported by other public surveys. These surveys show that many members of the public, including victims, are ready to shift the whole basis of the debate. Instead of debating whether to use harsh or lenient punishments, a substantial number of people are beginning to say 'use reparative sanctions instead of punishment'.
