Conflict is managed in a variety of ways by committees, steering groups and management boards within voluntary and nonprofit organisations. This conflict can lead to positive or negative outcomes for such organisations and it is the aim of this paper to explore these outcomes using illustrations from research on inter-agency partnerships conducted by the author during the mid and late 1990's. I will also draw on my experience of being a committee member of a UK based community mediation scheme between 1992 and 1997. A positive model of mediation and conflict resolution skills will be highlighted as 'good practice' for dealing with conflict in and around committees and inter-agency groups.
