The authors describe the philosophy and practice issues involved in the family group decision-making model aimed at stopping family violence. This model is being tested in a federally funded demonstration project in Newfoundland and Labrador. Set in a context of gains made by the women's and children's rights movements, the project has adapted the approach legislated in the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act in New Zealand in 1989. The project draws on aboriginal and feminist practices and analyses the adopt the use of the family group conferences in three communities.
