In 2000 the Catholic bishops of New York issued a pastoral statement on restorative justice and the criminal justice system – Restoring All to the Fullness of Life. In that document the bishops spoke about meeting the needs of people who have been harmed, those responsible for the harm, and society at large. Building on this pastoral statement, but going beyond the focus of the bishops, members of the Albany Catholic Worker Community urge the application of restorative practices to address harm or crime in the church. Specifically, they call for restorative approaches to respond to the harm caused by clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.
