In October 1997 South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) held a three day hearing into the role of the "legal community" - the role of law and lawyers during apartheid. This was but one of the hearings into the role of professions and institutions during apartheid; the others included hearings into the role of the media, the health sector, business and labour, the "faith community" or religious organisations, and the prisons.
