Allegritti reports on a pilot program to address the needs of women offenders better. The program is called WOMEN – Ways to Organise and Maintain Effective Networks. It began in response to various factors and realities affecting women offenders – such as alcohol and drug problems, and the significant percentage who remain as primary caregivers to children. Research indicated that there needed to be a radically different way of managing women offenders. Identification of “best practicesâ€? followed from the research phase. Allegritti explains how the program was devised and implemented, in partnership with a community agency, to address the relevant needs of women offenders.
