The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is a part of the Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. In 1999 the Bureau hosted a conference to explore local criminal justice strategies to achieve safe communities. It then published the conference materials.
The Bureau also made the materials available online in three components. The first document provides an overview of the entire meeting and its workshops. This document includes the conference agenda and a list of all of the workshops. The list of workshops contains summaries of the workshop topics and names of the workshop panelists. The second document provides a summary of the proceedings for each of the workshops. Among other topics, workshops covered matters such as the following: what is community justice; the role of our youth in community justice; community policing; restorative justice from the victim’s perspective; addressing tribal and non-tribal issues in law enforcement; tools to measure program effectiveness; and how to start a community court. The third document contains keynotes speeches, speaker biographies, and a contact list of participants and experts.
