This is a summary of a workshop presentation and discussion on the involvement of families in criminal justice processes. Criminal activity wounds the families of both victims and offenders. Fear, confusion, defensiveness, betrayal, and withdrawal from community life are just some of the experiences of families affected by crime. But how does the criminal justice process deal with the pain and suffering of families? What role can families play in creating and ensuring justice and reconciliation? This session compared and contrasted the involvement of the family in retributive and restorative justice processes. A discussion about the actual and potential involvement of families affected by crime was facilitated.
