Citing numerous dissatisfactions with the current system of justice, the Department of Justice in Nova Scotia has embarked on a restorative justice program. This document details the plan for that program. It begins with background information on restorative justice, crime prevention, and the existing criminal justice system. The document then summarizes the development of this restorative justice initiative: the beginning of action in Nova Scotia; goals and objectives of the initiative; and the role of the community. Description of the framework for this initiative constitutes the next section. This description covers entry points to the system, a continuum of options for handling cases, guidelines for the framework, and service delivery options. Then the document outlines the implementation of the initiative, including education, training, communication, evaluation, and time frame.
