This study evaluates the SACRO (Scottish Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders) Reparation and Mediation project in Scotland. The 3-year pilot project offered deferred prosecution and emphasized dispute resolution, services to victims, and offender accountability. Most disputes were settled with both parties able to sustain their agreements. Victims were satisfied both with their involvement in case resolution and with reparation; the accused were generally required to make amends that would be broadly comparable with likely court sanctions while avoiding the humiliation and other consequences of prosecution. Some “net-widening” did occur, and savings to the criminal justice system were not realized.
