This chapter examines the extent to which reparative considerations might be accommodated within a retributive criminal justice system. The thirty or so mediation and reparation schemes studied in England and Wales are described. The relationship between retributive justice and reparative justice is discussed (both are seen as species of distributive justice). The authors intention is to promote reparative justice as a much more effective and ambitious strategy than is the case now. The appropriate status for mediated agreements on reparation is also discussed.
Your donation helps Prison Fellowship International repair the harm caused by crime by emphasizing accountability, forgiveness, and making amends for prisoners and those affected by their actions. When victims, offenders, and community members meet to decide how to do that, the results are transformational.
