Churches, community groups and prisons

Harber and Nellis argue that prisons and communities must be more aware of each other: communities have much to offer prisons. Religious organizations can play a vital role in this interaction. In this article the authors report on a day conference in 1998 on the needs of women prisoners and ways in which voluntary groups can address those needs. Presentations and discussions covered principles that should govern the relationship between prisons and local voluntary groups, and practical details of what such groups can do to assist women prisoners.
