The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) works in prisons, schools, and communities to teach and inculcate nonviolence among people. Focusing on its work in correctional facilities, Bischoff evaluates AVP to determine how restorative it is. Toward this end, he describes the AVP program, and he looks at the extent to which AVP does and does not embody restorative principles. This leads to Bischoff’s examination of ways AVP could be more restorative. Bischoff’s paper builds on research, his own experience with AVP, and observations from a number of people involved in AVP and restorative justice.
