Hastings, Ross

While it seems perfectly true that reduction in crime and victimization must include prevention, prevention is a relatively recent addition to criminal justice policy, according to Hastings. It only became central to community safety strategies in the late 1980s in Canada. In view of the easy acceptance of its importance, Hastings raises certain challenges, especially relating to the capacity of communities for crime prevention and the accountability of communities for their own safety and security.
