Drug abuse and addiction often are accompanied by other issues, such as persistent criminal behavior. In general, the criminal justice system offers little or no addiction treatment or after-care services to drug addicts. Hence, criminal recidivism among addicts is high. In this context, LaPrairie and Gushue describe Canada’s first drug treatment court. With the primary goal of reducing harm and improving quality of life, the court operates within a therapeutic jurisprudence framework.
