Citing years of neglect of the educational needs of incarcerated young people, Carter White urges America to attend to the schooling of youths in juvenile detention and correctional centers. These young people, White argues, are entitled to a free American education despite their adjudication in the criminal justice system. In this context, White examines some of the inherent complexities in addressing the educational needs of incarcerated youths. Through this exploration, four layers of a multifaceted correctional education process are identified – judicial, legal, instructional, and spiritual.
