Porter reflects on how Christians – United Methodists in particular – respond to conflict and wrongdoing, with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as a terrible and stark challenge to fundamental principles and values. Amidst that challenge, he maintains that the essential question for Christians remains, “What is God’s love calling us to be and to do?â€? He urges individuals and congregations to face conflict and resulting trauma openly and constructively by learning the principles, values, skills, and processes that make possible the ministry of reconciliation and peace. On this basis he refers to various conflict resolution processes, such as circles, mediation, and relational covenants.
