Spending parts of each year in the United States and South Africa, Peter Storey is a native South African, a leader in the United Methodist Church in South Africa, and a professor at Duke Divinity School in the United States. With others he resisted apartheid in South Africa, and he participated in the selection of that country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In this article he explores non-violent, alternative approaches to dealing with conflict and seeking justice. He locates the foundation for these approaches in the new reality followers of Jesus live in because of their baptism into the Body of Christ. This new reality is the Kingdom of God. In this new order, justice does not consist in the perfect balance of deed and dessert, but in redemptive, restorative, merciful love.
