One of the editors of this volume, Dobrochna Wojcik also wrote the foreword. In it Wojcik sketches the background to restorative justice and offender-victim mediation in Poland, and summarizes the benefits of mediation. As in many other countries, mediation began in Poland in juvenile justice cases. This leads to a description, then, of the initiation of an experimental program in juvenile justice mediation in Poland in the mid 1990s, and how this program led to a Polish-European conference in Poland in October 1997 on mediation between juvenile offenders and their victims. Thus Wojcik introduces this collection of materials from the conference.
