Source: (2000) Paper presented at The Third Sector: For What and For Whom? Conference? Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. July 5-8.

This paper forms part of the work in progress of a doctoral thesis that focuses on the
contribution of the voluntary sector within the field of youth justice in Northern
Ireland. The paper, which begins by introducing the general principles of restorative
justice goes on to discuss the traditional aspects and international development of the
concept and how the restorative model has developed into an alternative paradigm of
juvenile justice. Attention is also given to the involvement of the family and the wider
community in a restorative approach.
