Victims of crime often suffer considerable harms, including economic losses. The aggregate costs of crime associated with victimization – medical expenses, lost earnings, public victim assistance services, and more – are estimated to be over $100 billion a year. Restitution by the offender is intended to compensate the victim for losses, at least to an extent. This publication provides an overview of state laws in the United States with respect to the rights of victims to receive court-ordered restitution. Topics include the status of such laws and current issues concerning restitution.
