Retributive Community Justice

This document presents a field study, conducted by the United Nations Child Justice Project and The Restorative Justice Centre, exploring why alleged child offenders sometimes become victims of communities which take the law into their own hands. Based on this field study, the researchers go further to make recommendations on how to promote more restorative community justice responses. The researchers conducted a literature review and worked with three case studies in South Africa involving retributive community responses to young offenders. This report covers the background to and aim of the research, a literature review, the research target groups and method, observations from interviews, key findings, and recommendations. Appendices add to the report with information about the research questionnaires, field interview records, and bibliography.
