David Schuringa is president of Crossroad Bible Institute, a nonprofit ministry that serves prison inmates through distance learning opportunities in Bible studies. In this first of two articles on restorative justice, Schuringa begins a review of Charles Colson’s book Justice That Restores (2001). Schuringa covers the first part of the book, which deals with the basis for a just society. According to Schuringa, Colson locates the failure of the criminal justice system in the failure of modern culture, where the concept of absolute truth is denied. In this perspective, there is no absolute right or wrong. The denial of absolute truth and an objective basis for ethics undermines moral thinking and behaving generally in culture and specifically in the criminal justice system.
