Over a period of about two years of consultation, including two national conferences of the Restorative Justice Exchange, restorative justice groups in New Zealand developed and completed a “values statement.” It was finished in mid-June of 2003. This statement presents core restorative justice values, each of which is summarized in the document, including descriptions of those values in practice. One aim in the document is to help identify when a conference process may be considered to be restorative. At the same time, the network sees the values being applied beyond the conference setting into relationships between restorative justice groups and between restorative justice groups and funding/regulatory agencies.
