In this article Jennifer Hamilton, a staff writer for a newspaper, portrays the efforts of the Broomfield (Colorado) City Council to experiment with a new, alternative response to crime. This alternative response is restorative justice. As Hamilton points out, it involves new ways to deal with victims and offenders in instances of crime. For example, restorative justice emphasizes not punishment per se, but accountability, healing for victims, and transformation for the community. Hamilton describes interest in restorative justice among city officials, as well as their desire to experiment with restorative justice and adapt it to their particular situation before completely endorsing it.
