As Lina Cramer and Lisa Merkel-Holguin note, family group decision making (FGDM) is being used in a number of states in the United States and in a number of countries around the world in their child welfare systems. FGDM empowers families. It engages families in developing a plan to nurture their children and protect them from further harm or neglect. The FGDM process attempts to foster cooperation, collaboration, and communication between child welfare professionals and families in difficult circumstances. To explain FGDM, Cramer and Merkel-Holguin survey primary models, principles, processes, and outcomes of FGDM.
