A number of organizations in Southern Africa to conduct a Southern Africa Reconciliation Project. This document reports on a research study which was part of the larger project. In the study, Oupa Makhalemele investigated the work of the Khulumani Support Group. This is a non-government organization (NGO) in South Africa which has been lobbying the government to put into place a clear reparations policy for survivors of apartheid-era political violence. Makhalemele outlines the organization’s major efforts and evaluates its effectiveness in lobbying the government and building support from other interested organizations. The study includes a detailed examination of Khulumani’s engagement with the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission on the issue of reparations.
