In 1993, the Navajo Nation initiated Yaa Da, Yam a pilot program designed to work directly with juveniles and their families through peacemaking processes, where traditional teaching is strongly encourages and implemented as a treatment plan. The program name, Yaa Da’ Ya, neatly illustrates the goals of this approach; the name means “upward bound†in the Navajo language. (excerpt)
