This article deals with the practical abolition of imprisonment for non-payment of fines (namely, a prison sentence replacing an unpaid fine) in Sweden and demonstrates that alternative provisions need not necessarily have a negative influence on honest payment of fines. It also attempts to place the de facto abolition of imprisonment for non-payment of fines in Sweden in a historical and crime policy context. (excerpt)
