It did not take me long to realise that his is a particularly unhelpful doctrine, partly because it would condemn me to years of not being able completely to forgive people who refused to repent and partly because I did not meet any fellow prisoner, guilty or innocent, who subscribed to this doctrine; it simply did not match their experience of forgiveness.
