Research clearly shows there is a relationship
between how children are treated in schools and
the number of juveniles involved with the legal
system (Browne, 2003). In the current climate
of zero tolerance in schools (Casella, 2003) this
outcome particularly applies to young persons
who have been “minoritized,” “racialized,” and
“marginalized” — that is, young people who
suffer from a social order that supports systemic
discrimination based on differences due to
minority status, race, and living on the margins of
