Unite is also running victim awareness induction workshops to new prisoner intakes at Kirklevington. It is aimed at getting prisoners to think about the effects of their crimes on their victims and the effects on the prisoners’ families.
One prisoner who attended a session said: “It opened my eyes.â€
Another said a crime victim who came to speak at one of the sessions had been very brave to share their story with the group.
Steve Robson, Kirklevington Grange’s governor, said there had been very positive outcomes from the mediation, for both the victim and the offender.
“Unite is also mediating between Kirklevington prisoners and their families where tensions or estrangement have occurred. Family support is recognised as a key factor in successful resettlement and in reducing reoffending,†he said.
Your donation helps Prison Fellowship International repair the harm caused by crime by emphasizing accountability, forgiveness, and making amends for prisoners and those affected by their actions. When victims, offenders, and community members meet to decide how to do that, the results are transformational.
