Jeremy Cronin writes that the transition underway in South Africa remains fluid. He identifies three general, interrelated dimensions to the transition: the politico-juridical; the socio-economic; and the moral. Each of the dimensions needs to be seen and understood in connection with the other two dimensions. Given this complex, the dominant trajectory and character of post-apartheid South Africa are contested and therefore uncertain. In particular, and with specific reference to the moral dimension, Cronin asks whether the transition will lead to a fairly conservative and elitist change in South Africa or to a more substantial transformation. Cronin thus examines the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as it relates to this question of conservative or substantive change in South Africa.
