The terrorist attacks of September 11 against targets in the United States led the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to issue a pastoral letter on November 14, 2001, to assist members of the Catholic Church and others in understanding and responding to those events. Employing theology, Scripture, ethical principles, and pastoral care, they examine issues such as the following: religious elements in those attacks; legitimacy in using military force to respond to the attacks; and the pursuit of justice and peace, especially after September 11. An appendix includes excerpts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the bishops’ earlier statement, The Harvest of Justice Is Sown in Peace, to outline the Catholic Church’s moral tradition concerning war and peace.
