In this article, Joanna Kerr portrays the passion and work of one member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. When Ken Smith joined the RCMP after serving as a municipal police officer, he was trained in the RCMP’s restorative justice perspectives and practices, particularly community justice forums. When he returned to his detachment in Moncton, New Brunswick, he joined a community-based policing unit, introduced restorative justice as part of the unit’s problem-solving approach, and trained police and community members in community justice forums. Using the example of a specific case addressed in a community justice forum, Kerr allows Smith to explain his strong belief in the rightness and effectiveness of restorative justice ideas and practices.
