In this short essay, Vera Boyle makes her case that punishment is an evil, and that incarceration is a punishment that ensures a further supply of professional criminals. She finds an example in the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission for going beyond punishment. Yet Boyle does state that some offenders, dangerous to the public or likely to re-offend, should be held in secure accommodation, with an emphasis on socialization and education.
